The Hawke’s Bay Tongan Community Langafonua Society Inc. is proud to share the success of Uike Lea Faka-Tonga 2025 (Tongan Language Week), a week filled with faith, culture, learning, and celebration of our Tongan language and identity.

Opening Ceremony – Sunday 17 August

The week began at the Hastings District Council Chambers, where we gathered with the CEO, To’osavili Nigel, our Vice Chairperson, FalekiheToa Tupou, who led the opening prayer, followed by a traditional kava ceremony and the raising of the Tongan flag while singing the National Anthem of Tonga.

That evening, we came together for a choir service, lifting our voices in thanksgiving and encouragement, reminding one another of the importance of cherishing and speaking our Tongan language.

Speech Competition – Monday 18 August

The focus was on this year’s theme, with children, youth, and adults all stepping forward. Kindergarten children shared Bible verses in Tongan, while Intermediate and High School students, alongside adults, presented speeches highlighting the importance of keeping our language alive — beginning in our homes. Parents also shared moving testimonies.

Fashion Night – Tuesday 19 August

The spotlight was on Tongan attire. Children modelled traditional outfits appropriate for different Tongan occasions. This was an important learning opportunity, ensuring our children in Aotearoa understand when and how to wear our traditional clothing with respect and pride.

Quiz Night – Wednesday 20 August

A lively evening of fun and learning, using Kahoot! to test our knowledge on Tonga’s history, royal family, sports, and famous Tongans across the world. Families enjoyed the quiz along with plenty of snacks and food.

Cultural Night – Thursday 21 August

Our talented Punake, Makalita Loiloi Pomale Uasi, taught and showcased traditional Tongan dances performed by our children. The night was a true celebration of hard work and dedication by the punake, the children, and their families. We extend a heartfelt Mālō ‘aupito to Makalita and her family for also preparing the ‘umu and BBQ meal that was shared with everyone.

Games Night – Friday 22 August

From kindy kids to adults, everyone joined in traditional and contemporary games with a Tongan twist. It was a joyful night of laughter and unity.

Final Day – Saturday 23 August

We closed Uike Lea Faka-Tonga 2025 with a special visit from the Mayor of Hastings, Her Worship Sandra Hazelhurst, and Councillors Henry Heke and Marcus Buddo, who joined us at Chatham Park for an Arts & Crafts Display.

The day continued with sports and BBQ, where families and RSE workers played touch and soccer before ending with music, food, and fellowship.

Mālō ‘aupito

We thank all our families, community members, leaders, and friends who joined us throughout the week. Together, we honoured the beauty and importance of our language, Lea Faka-Tonga, and strengthened the bonds of our Tongan community in Hawke’s Bay.

A special thank you to our 2025 sponsors:
